NISMAT Athletic Trainer's Corner: Taping for Plantar Fasciitis

by admin last modified 2007-03-08 10:43
Scenario:

You are the ATC for the track team and a sprinter comes to the training room with complaints of heel pain each time he wears his track spikes. You give this athlete treatment with stretching and tell her to see the team physician. After seeing the team physician the athlete is diagnosed with plantar fascitis. However, this will not prevent her from participating in her upcoming track meet. What taping technique would you use to give support to the plantar surface of the foot?

[Plantar Taping 1] Place anchor strip with 1-1/2-inch tape. One goes around the matatarsal heads. The other covers the medial and lateral borders of the foot.
[Plantar Taping 2] Use 1-inch tape. Starting at the fifth metatarsal head, follow the lateral border up then come around the calcaneous and across to finish where you started.
[Plantar Taping 3] Repeat the above, starting and finishing at the first metatarsal head.
[Plantar Taping 4] Alternate this arch crossing three times each way.
[Plantar Taping 5] Close the plantar surface of the foot with 1-1/2-inch tape splinting each previous piece.
[Plantar Taping 6] Finish by covering the anchor strips with two more anchor strips.
[Plantar Taping 7] Finished product.
