NISMAT Trainer's Corner: Elbow Hyperextension Taping
Scenario:
You are the trainer for a division I college football team. While being tackled, one of your players reaches out to soften his fall. Another player rolls onto his outstretched arm causing an elbow hyperextension injury. He has seen the Doctor who has cleared him for play but has suggested he see the trainer to tape the elbow for protection. What taping procedure might you use?
First determine the degree of extension that causes discomfort and slightly flex the joint for taping. Shave all surfaces where tape will contact the skin or cover the skin with prewrap.
| Step 1: Place successive anchor strips around the arm and forearm, proximal and distal to the elbow. The proximal anchor will be more effective if placed above the belly of the biceps. | |
| Step 2: Form an "X" over the anterior surface of the joint with four successive strips of tape. | |
| Step3: Crimp the center of the "X" to increase the tape strength and decrease the amount of elbow extension. | |
| Step 4: Apply anchor strips over the proximal and distal ends of the "X". | |
| Step 5: Completed taping procedure for elbow hyperextension. |
